How St. Joseph Boat Rentals Builds Pontoon Boats: A Step-by-Step Guide
At St. Joseph Boat Rentals, we take pride in building high-quality custom pontoon boats that offer an unforgettable experience on the water. Whether you're a seasoned boater or a first-timer, our custom-built pontoons are designed to provide comfort, safety, and endless fun. In this blog post, we’ll take you behind the scenes with our company and show you how we craft these incredible boats, step by step.
Step 1: Designing the Ideal Pontoon Boat
Building a pontoon boat starts with an excellent design. At St. Joseph Boat Rentals, we understand design and our team works closely with customers every day to understand their specific requirements—whether it’s the size of the boat, seating arrangements, or special features like sun decks, sounds systems or adapting to the newest technology.
Once the design stage is finalized, we create a detailed plan to ensure every measurement and detail is perfect. We take pride in building our boats, visualizing and ensuring both aesthetics and functionality meet our high standards.
Step 2: Choosing Quality Materials
The durability and performance of our pontoon boats depend on the materials we use. We source only the highest quality aluminum, which is lightweight yet strong enough to withstand the challenges of being on the water. The pontoons themselves are built with precision, ensuring they’re sealed tightly and equipped to handle the weight of the boat and passengers.

Step 3: Assembling the Frame and Pontoons
The foundation of any pontoon boat lies in its frame and pontoons. At St. Joseph Boat Rentals, our experienced team specializes in building and fabricating high-quality pontoon boats. We begin by constructing the aluminum crossmembers, which are then evenly bolted to the pontoons. This design ensures they can withstand the torque and weight that the boat will bear. To support the motor's placement, we add additional, larger crossmembers to the stern, where the majority of the torque will occur.

Once the crossmembers are securely in place, we install the transom motor mount and add the center pontoon, transforming the boat into a tri-toon. Unlike the standard two-pontoon design, all of our boats are tri-toons, which offer improved handling, as well as the ability to support more cargo and passengers.
After all components are bolted together, we carefully measure the distance from front corner to back corner, and vice versa, to ensure the frame is perfectly square. Once confirmed, we’re ready to move on to the plywood decking.
